3 Reasons to learn French

By FrenchMadeEasy

French is spoken by 300 Million people in the world (at least..) and is ranked the 5th within the most spoken languages. If I want to learn a new language, what could be more logical then opting for one of the top ranked languages. Whether it be to socialize or for business purposes, French is definitely a good choice to be able to communicate with a large range of people.

French is also THE language you should learn if you enjoy travelling (assuming that you’re already well versed in English…). France is a top tourist destination with more than 87 million per year (that was before covid obviously…). You also have no less than 21 countries in Africa where French is the official language. If you are not that much of a sun lover, you can also choose Belgium or Quebec for your French holidays and save on the sun cream budget as well…

If you aim to learn even more languages and become a polyglot, you should definitely learn French first. It will be a strong base to study other Romance languages like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and more. A significant amount of English vocabulary is also derived from French.

Immersion is key

First, you need to find a good reason to learn the language, something you had in mind when you started studying. Whether it be to pass an exam, to socialize with French speakers or any other purpose. That will help you to stay motivated. Then switch to the immersion mode, plunge into the French language completely. I remember having to choose an English name during my English classes at school; my teacher had probably understood the importance of the immersion process… You need to create a French framework in your daily life. Switch all your electronic devices into French; that’s a small yet very important step… Then focus on the INPUT: read and listen as much as possible. Watching TV or YouTube videos has to be done in French (you’ll probably have to activate the subtitles in your language in the beginning…), listen to the forecast or any podcast in French.

You should force yourself to read the ingredients of your prepared meals in French and not in your native language. If you have the possibility to go in a French speaking country, do so… if not the case, try to bring the French speaking country to yourself by creating opportunities. Like joining Facebook groups dedicated to French learning (or other social medias groups), chatting and talking to French natives online or if you already have a decent level, try to find a job where you will be able to speak French. Also, to build up a wider amount of vocabulary, you could label your furniture, appliances and other items around your house. Finally, I would advise to start thinking and make your inner conversations in French.

Never stop learning

Learning a language has to be a continuous process. Try to build the habit of learning regularly. The best would definitely be every day, even if it is small, make sure it is regular. The more you expose yourself to a language, the more it will become part of your life. By doing so, you will soon witness the radical change in your progress.

I have myself observed the harm done by the school breaks on my students. I had to go all over again some topics already covered. So do yourself a favour, and make sure your learning becomes part of your life without any day off. Once you hook the fish (a French fish obviously…), don’t let it go!!
